Home burglaries also go up at this time of the year with packages under trees as easy pickings. We also see the package thefts from porches picking up, so make arrangements for someone to be home to take in the packages when they arrive rather than leaving them as easy targets. Stay alert for anything that looks suspicious and call it in.

On Saturday, November 9th, 2019, a suspect broke the window of a vehicle in the parking lot at Walmart in Lacey and stole a purse. Videos show the suspect arriving, entering and leaving the store, and then approaching the victim’s vehicle. This is a reminder to never leave anything exposed in your car, regardless of the value. In this case, there was not much in the purse, but the window was still broken in order to grab it.

On Tuesday, November 22nd at 3:23 AM, a masked suspect entered the 7-Eleven at 6125 Pacific Ave SE in Lacey. The suspect stole numerous items from behind the counter while another masked suspect was watching at the door. Both suspects were last seen on foot traveling southbound on Carpenter Road SE.

This year’s annual Reindeer Run is being held Sunday, December 15th, 2019 at the Regional Athletic Center at 8345 Steilacoom Road SE, the corner of Steilacoom and Marvin Road SE, in Lacey. The venue allows the runners to stay off the public streets for a safer event. This event hosts both the certified 5K Run and the free Candy Cane Dash. For registration on this event go to www.active.com or in-store registration at South Sound Running on December 7th and 14th from 10 AM to 2 PM. There will also be registration on the day of the race starting at 7:30AM.

With the recent cold weather, we are once again seeing an increase in vehicles being stolen while the owner leaves it running to warm up in the driveway. Please, do not leave an unattended vehicle running. This is also a good time to remind you to never leave items in view in your vehicle. This becomes in invitation for theft. Remember, even if it’s something of little value, when the window is broken, you’re still stuck with replacing the window.

On Wednesday, October 16th at 6:22 PM the Hawks Prairie Pharmacy was robbed. Two black males jumped over the counter and demanded Oxycodone and Codeine. They threatened to shoot the employees, though no weapons were seen. They were both wearing gloves and had bandannas or masks pulled up over their mouths and noses. On Monday, October 7th, at 11:55 AM the US Bank inside the Olympia Safeway on Harrison Avenue NW was robbed. The suspect implied he was armed and handed the teller a note, then fled on foot. He is described as a white male in his thirties to early forties, about 5’ 10” and very thin, tan skin and long blonde hair, possibly dyed. He was wearing a black baseball hat, sunglasses, and a black and grey sweatshirt.

On Wednesday, September 4th, just before nine PM an elderly woman had her purse taken from her car. A black male and black female tricked her into helping them look for a ring which they claimed to have lost in the parking lot at Michael’s in Lacey. During that time they took her purse, and then used her cards to purchase multiple gift cards. On Sunday, September 22nd, an unknown male entered the Metro PCS store on Sleater Kinney Rd SE in Lacey and stated he wanted to change carriers. While the employee was setting up the new iPhone the suspect asked to see it. He looked at it and then put it in the box. He then grabbed the box and ran out of the store. He was last seen near the Fred Meyer gas pumps. Pictures are posted on the Lacey Police Department Facebook page as well as below.

On Friday, September 13, 2019, a theft occurred at the Lacey Kohl’s. A female took close to $400 worth of items, then dropped them in the parking lot as she was being chased. She is a white female with red hair, tattoos on her right hand, wrist, and shoulder as well as the center of her back. She was wearing jeans and a light colored tank top. On Sunday, September 1st, around 1:30 AM a burglary of an open garage occurred in the Hawks Prairie area of Lacey. Two males entered the garage and stole military equipment and tools. The robbery was captured via a Ring doorbell video. One of the suspects has been seen in the area and is believed to be a transient who hangs out around the Meridian Road NE area. On Wednesday, July 17th, between 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM a car was prowled in front of Sherwin Williams in Lacey. A purse was taken with a driver’s license and a few credit cards. One credit card was used to make purchases at several locations between Lacey and Kent. Attempts were also made on other cards. A week later money was withdrawn from the victim’s bank account in Spanaway. Pictures of the suspect are posted below and the Lacey Police Facebook page.

Recently there has been a sharp increase in thefts at area gyms. Wallets and purses have been taken from lockers as well as from cars in the parking lots around the gyms. The best advice is do not take valuables to the gym. If you are using a locker, get a quality lock. The price difference will be made up in the security of your items. Inexpensive locks, whether key or combination, are too easy to defeat. Thieves look for something quick in order to avoid being seen. Using quality locks and putting property out of sight in vehicles will encourage thieves to leave your valuables alone.

I am Lacey Police Detective Jon Mason on behalf of Crime Stoppers of the South Sound. The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office would like your help in solving the following crime.

On Wednesday, May 29th, two individuals stole an employee’s wallet from the employee break area at Winco Foods on Martin Way East in Thurston County. The two then left in a red 4 door sedan. They used the credit cards from this wallet at different businesses in the area buying pre-paid gift cards totaling more than $1,000.

The annual Cops, Cars and Kids event is coming up on Saturday, July 27th from 11 AM to 3 PM at the Lacey Police Department. This is a free event which includes a car show, fun and games for the whole family, free food and drinks and lots more. You can find out your blood type at the Bloodworks booth, and even donate blood while at the event. Visit with officers and detectives, sit in one of the police vehicles, build something with the Home Depot Kids Clinic, bounce in a bounce house, have a hotdog and snow cone, or just enjoy the pleasant atmosphere of this great community event. We hope to see you and your family there!

The hot days are here, which means we will be getting more calls about dogs being left in hot vehicles. In a very short time the heat rises to dangerous levels, high enough to cause serious injury or death to the animals that are left in your car. When the outside air is 70 degrees, a car can heat up to 89 degrees in just 10 minutes, and to 104 degrees in 30 minutes. At 80 degrees outside, you’re looking at 99 degrees inside a vehicle in 10 minutes and 114 in 30 minutes. Save your dog and keep it at home instead.

The Police and Sheriff would like to remind you about local fireworks ordinances since Independence Day is approaching. Many of the jurisdictions now have bans on all fireworks, and those areas that still allow them only permit certain types, the ones called “Safe and Sane.” Fireworks in Thurston County are permitted between 9AM and 11PM on July 3rd and 4th ONLY. Every year we see several injuries from improper handling of fireworks. Several fires are started around the area by fireworks as well. For those who want to view fireworks, Lacey has the third of July display at Rainier Vista Park, and Tumwater has their fireworks on the fourth in Tumwater Valley.

On Sunday, May 26th, a white male entered the Park Place Shell station and attempted to purchase $10 worth of fuel. He presented what turned out to be a counterfeit $100 bill. When confronted about the bill and advised law enforcement was being called, he became agitated and walked behind the counter and got into a physical confrontation. He took the clerk’s cell phone and ran from the store. Pictures of the suspect are shown below as well as the Lacey Police Facebook page.

On Friday, April 12th, a Lacey resident was loading her groceries into her vehicle at Costco when an unknown person stole her purse and immediately used her credit cards at the Lacey and Tumwater Fred Meyer’s stores. The Police and Sheriff would like to remind everyone to stay alert. Vehicle prowls are increasing in Thurston County. Having your car broken into is no fun! You lose your belongings, have to pay for a new window or broken lock, deal with insurance, clean up broken glass, and the headache and time that come with dealing with those issues. Get in the habit of looking around every time you leave your car to make sure you didn’t accidentally leave something in sight. Anything that even seems like it could have value puts you at risk. Even an empty grocery bag could tempt a thief!

The days are getting warmer as the recent days have demonstrated. Heatstroke is one of the leading causes of non-crash-related fatalities among children. Vehicle heatstroke occurs when a child is left in a hot vehicle, allowing for the child’s temperature to rise in a quick and deadly manner. Heatstroke begins when the core body temperature reaches about 104 degrees. A core body temperature of about 107 degrees is lethal. Unfortunately, even great parents can forget a child in the back seat. It’s vitally important to understand children are more vulnerable to heatstroke than adults.

On Wednesday, April 24th, Gary W. Lawson was reported missing by his wife. He was last seen when he was dropped off at McCord Air Force Base where he was planning to fly to Greece. It has been confirmed he has not left the country. Gary is 100% disabled and possibly suffers from dementia. Gary is a 65 year old white male, 5’ 10” tall, 260 pounds with gray hair and brown eyes. His picture is below as well as the Lacey Police Facebook page.

On Monday, April 15, 2019, a package theft occurred in the 900 block of North 9th Avenue in Tumwater. The package was stolen off of the porch at about 4:30 PM and the theft was captured by video surveillance. This is not the first package theft in the neighborhood. The suspect left the scene after getting into the passenger seat of a black four door sedan. If you recognize the person in the photos below, please call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 right away.

Saint Martin’s is located at 5000 Abbey Way SE in Lacey. Entry from Pacific Avenue SE will get you to the event. It’s time to get all those documents with personal information properly shredded for security. On Sunday, April 7th, 2019, the Pho Tai restaurant in College Street SE in Lacey was burglarized. Electronic equipment and a cash drawer with cash were taken. Entry was made through the rear door. Pictures show a light skinned male wearing a black/gray hat, black jacket, black gloves, and brown shoes with medium length black hair. He was in the restaurant for only a couple of minutes. On Sunday, March 10th, 2019, at approximately five PM a suspect forced entry into Johnstone Supply on Orion Drive NE in Lacey and stole merchandise. Videos show a white male in a red hooded sweatshirt throw a rock at the front glass door, then using his foot to break out the glass. In less than three minutes he exited the building with stolen merchandise and put it in a red vehicle and then drive away. See the images below.

I am Lacey Police Detective Jon Mason on behalf of Crime Stoppers of the South Sound. The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office requests your help in solving this Crime of the Week.

On Saturday, March 9, 2019, a bronze bell that was located above the main entrance to McLane Elementary School in West Olympia was stolen. A video shows a single person pulling up to the school in a truck, then using a ladder, removing the bell. It weighs about 60 to 70 pounds and is about 20” by 20”. The value is estimated around $2,000. It is the historic value that makes the bell special.

During the afternoon of Saturday, March 2nd, a home on Camano Loop NE in Lacey was burgled while the owners were out for a walk. On their return they saw the suspect flee the house carrying a pillow case. He entered a white Chevy Suburban or Tahoe and fled. The suspect is described as a white male, around 5’ 10” tall with short hair wearing a white jacket and blue jeans. He took a significant amount of jewelry, including several wedding rings, and a coin collection. A purse was also taken with ID, credit cards and a cell phone.

During the night of March 1st, 2019, several vehicle and three bus shelters had glass shot out by BBs or pellets. This happened along College Street SE between 6th Avenue SE and Martin Way E, as well as along Martin Way E from I-5 to Desmond Drive SE, in Lacey. The suspect vehicle is believed to be a dark colored sedan. Another incident, which may be involved, happened the same evening on Pacific Ave SE while a vehicle was waiting to turn into the Fred Meyer parking lot.

On Friday, January 25th, 2019, a stolen credit card was used to purchase a cell phone at the Lacey Walmart on Galaxy Drive NE. The picture shows a light skinned male, early 20’s with a thin build. He is wearing a blue long sleeved shirt, short pants and has dark brown hair. See his picture below. If you know who he is please report it to Crime Stoppers.

One of the scams that is going around the area at this time is the “job offer scam.” Among the warning signs of this scam are being offered a job without an application, interview or discussion; the company asking you to wire money or give your personal information like your social security number; being told you have to pay for a credit report; or being asked to cash a check and forward the money to a third party. Remember, when it seems to be too good to be true, it usually is.

The Lacey Police Department is asking for your help in locating Kyler Deckert. He is a transient known to frequent the Chehalis-Western Trail as well as the cities of Lacey, Olympia and Tumwater. Kyler is a 25 years old white male with hazel eyes, 175 pounds and 6 feet tall. He currently has an outstanding DOC felony warrant for his arrest.

Identity Theft is a Growing Issue

There are several way to help protect yourself from becoming a victim.

Car prowls are one of the ways identity thieves steal your information. Another way they get your information is by mailbox thefts, so make sure to pick up your mail quickly even if you have a lock on your mailbox.

If you suspect your identity has been compromised, contact the credit reporting agencies to lock your credit. As of September 2018 a new federal law allows people to freeze and unfreeze their credit at the three major credit bureaus without being charged.

On Wednesday, November 28, 2018, a vehicle was broken into at the Yelm Avenue Pizza Hut. The vehicle’s window was broken and a backpack and wallet were taken. Within minutes there had already been several transactions on the stolen credit cards at the Yelm Walmart. Based on surveillance videos there are two suspects.

On Sunday, December 16th, a home was burglarized on Orcas Place NE in Lacey. The rear door was forced open and rare jewelry, coins and religious figurines from India were stolen. This occurred during the short time the home owner was away from home. Pictures of some of the items is on the Crime Stoppers Website.
